Humans of Avivo – Vaughan McConnell

Delivering high‑quality support in regional Western Australia has its challenges and requires a high level of adaptability, creativity, and a deep commitment to customers and community.
In Geraldton, Support Worker Vaughan McConnell exemplifies these qualities every day with Avivo, quietly and consistently doing the work to ensure his customers receive equitable, meaningful, and reliable support.
Vaughan’s strong understanding of the unique challenges that regional areas face in service delivery helps him in his role as a Support Worker. From limited resources, to workforce shortages and geographical isolation, he approaches these challenges with a people-first mindset, always focusing on the best way to support individuals.
“One of Vaughan’s greatest strengths is his ability to build strong, trusting relationships with customers who have high and complex needs,” said Corrina Brimson, Service Coordinator for Coral Coast.
“Through structured routines and personalised strategies, he helps people feel safe, regulated, and connected to their communities.”
Vaughan knows that support work is much more than ticking off tasks, and in a regional setting, every outing and interaction is an opportunity for connection and social inclusion. He supports his customers to build relationships and engage with their local community, helping to foster positive interactions in places where isolation can be strongly felt.
Taking action
Importantly, Vaughan doesn’t just identify gaps in services. When he sees a challenge, he takes action – seeing opportunities for improvement. He’s consistent in his work and takes time to get to know each customer’s needs, preferences, and frustrations, which can help him to find better solutions.
During periods when staff availability has been low, Vaughan helps ensure supports are still delivered, and customers feel safe, seen, and heard.
Vaughan’s impact extends beyond those he directly supports. Families feel reassured knowing their loved ones are in safe hands, and colleagues value his clear communication and collaborative approach.
Vaughan speaks openly about the reciprocity of support work and the fulfilment he gains from helping others live richer, more connected lives.
Award nomination
Vaughan’s consistent and reliable work ethic translated into a nomination at the 2026 NDS Disability Support Awards for Excellence in Regional Support Work.
We’re so proud to have Vaughan as part of our Regional Team and are pleased we could recognise his dedication through an award nomination.
Well done Vaughan!
