Your Veterans’ Home Care has been approved – what’s next?
Receiving approval for Veterans’ Home Care (VHC) support marks the beginning of a new chapter. It’s a fresh start with less pressure to manage everything at home on your own.
It’s reassuring to know that support is available and your everyday life will soon get easier.
But for many veterans, war widows and widowers, and their families, the next question after approval is usually, “What happens now?”.
Now that you’ve received approval, the focus shifts to putting the right support in place so you can continue living independently and comfortably at home.
What’s next – in four easy steps
Step one: Understand the services you’ve been approved for
Following your assessment, you’ll receive information about the services you’ve been approved to access.
Depending on your circumstances, this may include support with:
- household tasks such as cleaning and laundry;
- personal care;
- home and garden maintenance;
- respite services for carers; or
- other practical supports that help you remain independent at home.
The services you receive will be based on your individual needs and your assessment outcome.
Take some time to look through what’s included in your services. If it feels like a lot to take in, it can help to go through it with a family member, friend, or someone you trust.
Read our blog, Veterans Home Care explained simply, for a refresher on what the program includes.
Step 2: Meet your provider
Next, you’ll be connected with a provider who can deliver your services.
This is an important step because it’s your opportunity to discuss your situation, ask questions, and begin planning how support will work in your day-to-day life.
At Avivo, we take the time to get to know you, understand your routines, and learn what’s important to you. We know that there are more benefits to your support when it fits naturally into your life.
We encourage you to ask questions at all stages. Understanding how your support works from the beginning can help you feel more confident and get the most from your services.

Step 3: Create a support plan that meets your needs
No two people are exactly alike, which is why support shouldn’t be either.
Together with your provider, you’ll develop a personalised support plan that reflects your needs, preferences, and goals.
The most important thing is that your support is tailored to what matters most to you, whether that’s:
- help maintaining your home;
- staying on top of daily tasks and errands;
- reducing pressure on a family member; or
- continuing hobbies, social activities, community connections, and activities that are important to you.
The aim is that the support doesn’t take over. It’s there to provide the right level of help so you can keep doing the things that matter most in your life.
Quick tip:
If a family member helps coordinate your care, consider involving them in conversations about your support plan and goals.
Step 4: Start receiving support
Once your plan is in place, your services can begin.
It can take a little time to settle into a new routine, but many people find that even small amounts of support make a big difference to their everyday life.
Read our blog, ‘How to feel comfortable with a new support provider’ for our tips on feeling understood and at ease in your own home.
Set goals and expectations early
One of the best ways to get the most from your support is to think about what you want to achieve.
Think about what’s becoming harder to manage on your own, what’s causing stress, or what you’d like to spend more time and energy on.
You might even think about the needs of the people who support you. Where could a little extra help make a meaningful difference?
Here are some example goals to inspire you:
- staying independent at home;
- reducing stress around household tasks;
- maintaining your health and wellbeing;
- giving a family carer regular breaks; or
- feeling more confident and supported in everyday life.
Having clear goals helps your provider tailor your services in a way that delivers the greatest benefit.
Remember that support can change over time
Good support should grow and adapt alongside you.
At Avivo, we understand that your needs today may not be the same as your needs in six months or a year.
That’s why Veterans’ Home Care includes regular reviews and reassessments. If your circumstances change, your support can be reviewed to ensure it continues to meet your needs.
Did you know?
There’s no need to wait until your next review if your circumstances change. If you’re finding you need more support or something isn’t working as expected, talk to your provider.
Tips for getting the most from your Veteran Home Care
A few simple things can help you make the most of your Veterans’ Home Care services.
It’s important to:
- be open about what’s working and what isn’t;
- ask questions if you’re unsure about any part of your support;
- share changes in your health or circumstances;
- focus on the goals that matter most to you; and
- remember that support is there to help maintain your independence, not take it away.
Remember: Keep asking questions, speak up if your needs change, and know that your support should be shaped around what matters most to you.
Support that works with you
Veterans’ Home Care is designed to help you stay independent, comfortable, and connected to the life you love – in the place you love the most.
Once you’re approved, the hard part is done. From here, the process becomes less about paperwork and more about creating support that genuinely works for you.
When the right help is in place, you can focus less on the challenges of everyday life and more on the people, places, and activities that bring you joy.
